Possible future firefighters took part in a full day of training in December at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Brigade Training Centre in Handsworth. The young people, who ranged in age from 13 to 17, came from all over the county in order to learn what it takes to make a good firefighter, as well as to learn vital life skills. The first part of the day was taken up with industrial training involving the use of fire extinguishers, as well as instruction regarding fire safety in the home. The afternoon meanwhile was spent learning how to use breathing apparatus in the fire training facility. More general topics included life-saving skills and first aid, moral decision making and team awareness, alongside the development of leadership qualities. Speaking about the event, Watch Manager Andy Kirwan of the county’s Youth Engagement Team, said: “This is a fantastic scheme which gives young people new skills and builds self-confidence. The programme doesn’t guarantee entry into the Fire Service, but it’s great to see young people enjoy and achieve, and make a positive contribution to their community.” Councillor Jane Bird, Vice-Chair of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority commented: “The Fire Authority is proud to support the Young Firefighters’ Scheme. It’s heartening to see youngsters who are so enthusiastic about becoming involved with such an important public service. The majority of officers give up their time voluntarily and they are to be commended for their dedication.” The Young Firefighters’ programme was introduced in South Yorkshire in 2000. It currently has three branches in Sheffield, one in Barnsley and one in Doncaster.
