Kent hoax call clampdown PDF Print E-mail

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is clamping down on people making hoax calls by mobile phone by requesting that connections be cut off by the service provider.
The move follows a spate of hoax calls that were received at the end of January. KFRS’s Group Fire Control Officer Beverley Luque said: “Hoax calls waste firefighters’ time and represent a huge drain on resources. More importantly, they have the potential to divert crews from genuine emergencies and could result in a loss of life.” She continued: “People may think it is harmless fun but it certainly is not. As well as placing lives in danger, hoax calls can have major repercussions for the individuals that make them – they lead to mobile phone disconnection, heavy fines or even imprisonment. We would urge anyone considering making calls of this nature to think twice.” Those that make such calls to Kent FRS from a mobile phone will receive a warning text message. If further calls are made the service provider will be contacted to request disconnection. In some instances, the phone will be cut off immediately.
