Suffolk deals with bird flu outbreak PDF Print E-mail

As FIRE goes to press, Suffolk is still dealing with the first major outbreak of Bird Flu (H5N1) in the UK. Whilst the State Veterinary Service has concentrated on the site at Holton near Halesworth itself, efforts on the ground have been led primarily by Suffolk’s Trading Standards staff, co-ordinated by the Joint County/District Emergency Planning Unit, working to the direction of the Department of Food and Rural Affairs.
The contribution of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has also been magnificent with local crews assisting in the delivery of information packs to local farmers within the restriction zone and provision of public information leaflets to reassure the public. Efforts of all those involved nationally, regionally and locally have been praised in the House of Commons and it is hoped that this particular outbreak has been fully contained.
Suffolk County Council’s response was led by the Director of Public Protection (Lee Howell) who has responsibility for Trading Standards, Emergency Planning and the Fire and Rescue Service. For more information on the local response, please contact
