In a rich array of learning and development issues, we start this month’s feature with a discourse on ethical leadership from Christopher Keeble. He explains that the ethical challenge is to know how things are ethically in order to implement the action that ought to be undertaken to sustain goodwill for the delivery of performance. CFO Paul Fuller describes the ethical leadership style in action, as it has applied to Bedfordshire and Luton. He explains that the ethic of leadership is having the ability to see things as they really are and then having the capability and courage to make things how they ought to be.

Award
The Fire Service College’s Fire Related Research and Developments (REO7) conference will take place on November 7-8. FIRE is pleased to announce that we will be presenting the FIRE/Gore Research Excellence Award for the most challenging and captivating research paper. Dr Anne Eyre details the submission requirements.

No More Prejudice
The Equality Act 2006 and impending 2007 Single Equality Act will ensure people who are lesbian, gay and bisexual will have the same protection against discrimination as anyone else. In a challenging exploration of the issues surrounding the development and implementation of the legislation, union officials Stewart Brown and Peter Purton argue against the use of exemptions stating that no-one should be denied any
public service because of their sexuality.
The authors support the ‘long-overdue’ legislation which will ensure everybody is treated equally, putting to an end a ‘disgraceful situation’.
