A London Fire Brigade safety campaign for firefighters using retro wartime imagery won over judges at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Recruitment Marketing Awards. The poster campaign, entitled ‘Declare Victory Over Accidents’, won the Best Internal Marketing Category at the prestigious awards and judges praised both the quality of art direction and concept of the campaign. The campaign consisted of a series of six posters which used a wartime theme to convey safety messages targeted at firefighters, who make up most of the brigade’s 8,000 strong workforce. The aim of this campaign is to continue to ensure that health and safety remains a key operational focus and priority. The brigade worked closely with Work Communications, a design consultancy, to produce the posters, which remind firefighters to ensure their visibility at incidents to passing vehicles, to take extra precautions when driving fire engines, and to beware of uneven and broken flooring at fires. Deputy Commissioner Roy Bishop said: “LFB’s accident rate remains low in comparison with many other fire and rescue services, and has been dropping year on year. This campaign really ensures we continue to buck the national trend and reduce our accident rate.” The judges said: “Putting basic internal health and safety messages to fire brigade staff risks getting a somewhat cynical reaction. But these beautifully crafted, retro-style posters were a convincing solution.”
