“This project has its roots in the Fire and Rescue Service modernisation agenda, articulated in the National Framework, and the North West region is at the forefront of this agenda for improvement. The services involved are the pioneers in their recognition of community integration as a key to making communities safer.”
Colin Schofield on how PFIs are being used to reinvigorate fire and rescue services in the North West (pg 42)
“Care homes have a one in 30 chance of a fire outbreak this year… This past May alone there have been reports of a spate of fires and court cases where failure to implement adequate fire prevention measures has led to prosecutions. Two care home fires resulted in the evacuation of over 90 residents, involving 17 fire crews and hospitalising seven elderly residents suffering from smoke inhalation.”
Chris Pearce, Fireco, on the scale of the problem in protecting elderly occupants of care homes (pg 48)
“The design and delivery of this leadership programme mirrors the need of senior managers in the public sector. It gives them an opportunity to discuss critical issues facing communities and the services that support them, meaning that tough problems are being resolved more quickly. Getting senior people and stakeholders to talk to each other is a must for the future and organisations are recognising, more than ever before, the power of academic collaboration.”
Dr Sally Watson, Director of Executive Education at Lancaster University Management School, on senior FRS managers attending the leadership course (pg 53)
“Developing new fire stations may be a crucial component to success, but gaining planning permission for this is not a simple process. Most UK fire stations were built at a time when our town planning system was relatively straightforward. Today, the process of obtaining permission for a new station can be lengthy and onerous.”
Steve Coult from law firm Browne Jacobson on seeking planning permission for new fire stations (pg 54)
