RDS overtime payments
Is the grey book a little too grey? When it comes to the Retained Duty System, says Tony Whiting, perhaps it is
In This Section:
“CEN could take up to three years to adopt a standard for fire safer cigarettes, after receipt of the mandate from the European Commission. This seems a very long time, particularly given that the standard which has already been adopted in the USA, Canada and soon in Australia (ASTM E2187-02b) has proved its effectiveness. It would make sense for the EU to adopt the same standard rather then to define a new one and I hope that this can be done more quickly than if work has to begin from scratch. It will be important that fire and rescue services and other sympathetic organisations across Europe now lobby the Commission to adopt a decision that pushes CEN to adopt the existing international standard, and for a positive move in this direction in November.”
Sir Ken Knight on campaign progress for the introduction of ‘fire safer’ cigarettes as a standard across Europe (pg 47)
“An evaluation conducted with thepupils taking part in the shows highlighted a convincing movement to more positive risk-taking behaviour. We also demonstrated evidence of a transformation in attitude and awareness of risk management and personal limitations, particularly in relation to the potential consequences of taking ‘stupid’ risks.”
Tyne and Wear’s John Adamson on the advantages of the Smartrisk scheme (pg 52)

“One thing is certain doing nothing is not an option, being both immoral and in direct contravention of the grey book. Whilst I understand that this issue will send even the very best of payroll departments into a spin due to the amount of work that needs to be done, it must be remembered if a member of staff is entitled to overtime payments then they should get it. This can no longer be left in the ‘too difficult’ box.”Tony Whiting on RDS overtime payments (pg 54)
