Fifty firefighters were called to tackle a large fire on a construction site near Lemsford Road in Hatfield, Hertfordshire on August 11. Operators at Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s control room took the first of over fifty 999 calls to the incident, which took place at around 1723 on the Saturday afternoon. On arrival, firefighters were faced with a rapidly-developing fire in a partially complete five storey block of flats. The intense radiated heat also affected an industrial unit and 14 houses. A number of people had to be led to safety from their homes at the height of the fire and were unable to return due to the damage caused. A total of 12 fire engines, two Aerial Ladder Platforms and the service’s control unit were sent to the incident. Firefighters used eight jets and two ground monitors to deal with the fire, which took an hour and a half to bring under control. Crews then remained on scene throughout the night damping down. The cause of the fire is still to be determined and fire investigation and police officers are carrying out a full investigation into the cause.
