Kent learning scheme goes from strength to strength PDF Print E-mail
Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s commitment to lifelong learning has been crystallised thanks to a pioneering agreement between the Fire Brigade’s Union and KFRS. The Learning Agreement, formally signed recently by the FBU and CFO Charlie Hendry, allows for online courses to be accessed on duty, subject to the requirements of the service. It is one of only 12 Learning Agreements in place throughout the national Fire and Rescue Service.
At the moment nearly 100 people are taking part in recognised IT courses – a figure that should be doubled by Christmas. Other courses taken up include the Institute of Leadership and Management, Home Networking and PC Doctor courses at Strood Fire Station’s Learning Room, as well as Drugs Awareness seminars and Fire Service specific sign language courses. CFO Charlie Hendry said: “We are extremely pleased to be part of this agreement. Here at Kent Fire and Rescue Service we take great pride in our staff and are keen to be involved with the FBU in a scheme that encourages and develops a range of different skills.” Bob Fitzgerald, who heads up the FBU Learning Fund project, said: “We are expected to double the number of station Union Learning reps by November which should help to embed the learning culture throughout the KFRS and support individuals to reach their full potential, both at work and at home.”
