Injured firefighters remain in hospital PDF Print E-mail
The two South Yorkshire firefighters who were injured when attending a fatal fire in Waterthorpe remain in hospital receiving treatment for serious burns.
Firefighter Ian Tape has suffered 35 per cent burns to his body, mainly from the waist upwards. He is expected to remain in hospital for at least four weeks. The 32-year-old is based at Maltby Fire Station, whose Station Manager Andy Hoyland said: “Ian is a well-liked and respected member of Red Watch who has unfortunately received severe injuries. He is being well supported by his wife and two-year-old son, and his parents have travelled up from Essex to be with him. He is receiving the best possible care from the staff at the Northern General Hospital burns unit.” Firefighter Grant Baugh has sustained around 12 per cent burns, most of which are thankfully relatively superficial. He is recuperating at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield. Grant, aged 27, is based at Rotherham Fire Station. Station Manager Steve Makepeace said: “Grant is a young, enthusiastic firefighter who has suffered some serious injuries. However, he is being well supported by his family and friends and his condition is improving steadily.”
A South Yorkshire spokesperson told FIRE that senior fire officers are in ongoing contact with the injured firefighters and their families to provide whatever support is required. CFO Mark Smitherman said: “My thoughts are with our injured firefighters and their families. Everyone at South Yorkshire wishes them a full and speedy recovery.”
