Youths who steal cars and leave them burnt out are the focus of a new DVD launched by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue. The educational tool is being marketed to other fire and rescue services which may wish to highlight the issue with young people or as part of community fire safety work in schools. My Secret Habit is the first DVD of its type to feature the problem of youths taking vehicles without consent, known as twocing, as it focuses on youths’ view of the activity. John Whaler, Youth Engagement Team Manager, said: “The DVD is a lively way of engaging with young people. It is an easy to follow storyline and comes at the subject more from the angle of the effect twocing has on the victims. “By taking this message out to communities we hope this will make young people who may be tempted into twocing to consider the possible consequences of their actions.” John added: “The DVD fits in well with other work involving young people at school or in partnership with the Youth Offending Service. We feel that it’s insufficient to “just say No” and that young people should be given all the information to enable them to make the right choices. “It also links in with the work with young people through the Prince’s Trust, where we help to raise the self esteem and confidence of young people, through project work linked to firefighting skills.”
