Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Health and Safety Team tested the latest Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and were glad to find that it worked well when worn over full firefighting kit. Two members of the team, Mick Harlow and Kevin Yip, carried out the tests at a local swimming pool. Helen Crampton said: “They also carried out a test to see what happened when someone was in the water in full fire kit without a PFD. We found that a quantity of air remained within the garments which can keep an individual afloat for a time, but with movement, such as struggling to swim, the air dissipates, and as the garments and boots get waterlogged the individual starts to sink. The exercise highlighted that the PFD does its job with different sized individuals and provides valuable protection when required.”
