Fire services unite in cross border agreement PDF Print E-mail
Fire crews in Shropshire and neighbouring north Wales are working together to use both their resources of firefighters and equipment in dealing with outbreaks of fire in the border regions. It will mean even better fire cover for residents and businesses living in Oswestry, Ellesmere and Chirk, said District Officer Phil Brooks, who organised the cross border agreement.
The chief fire officers of Shropshire and North Wales have now signed the formal agreement to share resources and liaise with each other. “Our fire and rescue services have always worked together very well for many years but this formal agreement means that we will be increasing our efforts to liaise with each other which will improve our service to the public even more,” said Shropshire CFO Alan Taylor. Under the Fire Services Act of 2004, brigades are required to work together with their neighbouring fire and rescue services. Within days of the agreement being signed fire crews from Chirk joined their counterparts from Oswestry in a massive exercise at Whitchurch Business Park in which firefighters tested their firefighting techniques at a huge warehouse on the site. They familiarised themselves with the building’s layout in readiness for a future fire.
