County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service has celebrated a year with no accidental dwelling fire related deaths. The service, which serves nearly 600,000 residents throughout the area, has seen a gradual decline in the number of accidental fire deaths over the last two decades. Chief Executive Susan Johnson said: “We are delighted to report there have been no accidental dwelling fire deaths in County Durham and Darlington. “To achieve our vision of Safer People, Safer Places, our primary aim is to prevent deaths and injuries from fire in the communities we serve; initially by response and rescue and increasingly through our community safety prevention programmes. “It is always a tragedy when the service has to report an accidental fire death – the sadness and misery these incidents cause within our communities cannot be quantified. So, to be able to report to residents that a full year has gone by without a single death is tremendously rewarding for all our staff and partner agencies – it’s why we do what we do. “However, we can only continue to improve the safety of our citizens with the continued help and support of local residents, as well as our partner agencies, such as police, health and local authorities. We very much hope that, by continuing to work in partnership, we are able to report the same result again next year.”
