Preparing for the challenges of the future This year’s US/UK Symposium saw a gathering of senior fire service personnel from both sides of the Atlantic who got together in the north east of the USA for a fascinating and productive exchange of ideas and examination of the future. John Moreton reports In This Section: “The difference between a winner and loser comes down to a matter of attitude. If people don’t believe in you, they won’t follow” Keynote speaker Simon Weston at FIRE’s centennial conference “Service, dignity, respect, inegrity and honesty... These should be a golden thread that runs through all that we do. All interactions have to be predicated on the same value system. Leaders must behave in a way that is based on core values” Conference chair Des Prichard on leadership prerequisites “It makes business sense to mainstream equality and diversity. To reduce fire deaths and injuries we must access the vulnerable and hard to reach. The Service cannot be selective on how it conducts its business. The Fire and Rescue Service must be the employer of choice for more groups” Fire Minister Parmjit Dhanda on the diversity and equality strategy for the Fire and Rescue Service “Delegates felt that the key issue for FRAs, now that the BCC requirement has gone, is ensuring genuine competence for the individuals in the roles that they are undertaking. There was considerable debate around the distinction between an operationally competent and a strategically competent officer and how those competencies can be best acquired” John Moreton reports from the US/UK Symposium
