Award for ‘going green’ PDF Print E-mail

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service has been presented with an award for ‘going green’. An awards evening was held in London to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Environmental Management System standard ISO 14001. The ISO 14001 is an international quality benchmark that recognises commitment to being environmentally aware and responsible. In 2004 Merseyside became the first fire and rescue service to be awarded the accreditation.

The Fire Service received the award for being environmentally responsible in the workplace. It was named Best Public Sector Organisation. Merseyside has achieved specific reductions in use of water, CO2/green house gas emissions, utility consumption, waste and improved recycling. It has also looked for innovative ways of doing this, such as the introduction and use of Compressed Air Foam.

Mike Low, Director of British Standards, said: “It is very encouraging to see organisations of all sectors and sizes taking environmental responsibility seriously and gaining business advantage in the process. A company’s environmental performance can have a significant impact on its success for customers and shareholders alike. It is hoped that by showing how much those companies who have taken advantage of ISO 14001 over the last 10 years have benefited others will be spurred on to do the same. The success of ISO 14001 and the organisations that use it is of particular pride here in the UK as we originated the standard on which it is based.”
