Dr Joe McKee has been appointed Chairman of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) Board for a four-year term from January 1, 2011, by the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS). The NIFRS Board is responsible for the governance, direction and performance of Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, as well as ensuring that it is resourced and supported in order to continue to provide a first class fire and rescue service to the people of Northern Ireland.
From September 2002, he had been employed as BELB Head of Music Service and Principal of the City of Belfast School of Music. Prior to this, he had been a Radio Producer at BBC Northern Ireland, before moving to Methodist College Belfast as Director of Music and Head of Faculty.
Dr McKee is currently serving as a Trustee of the Grand Opera House, Belfast, and is a Member of the Central Advisory Panel of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He has previous board experience with Castleward Opera and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.
In his early career he was a firefighter, gaining operational experience in Carrickfergus, Belfast, Armagh and Ballymena, so he brings to the appointment practical knowledge of a community based service.
