What are Lithium Battery Fire Extinguishers?

Lithium Battery Fire Extinguishers are a new class of fire extinguisher designed to tackle small but fiercely hot lithium-ion fires caused by damaged or overheated batteries from mobile phones, tablets and similar devices before they become a full-scale fire.

 

How do Lithium Battery Fire Extinguishers work?

When the internal partitions of a lithium-ion cell are damaged, it can create a short which leads to an intense fire very rapidly. These are hard to extinguish with traditional fire extinguishers or water. Even when the original fire is extinguished, the cells can heat up again and re-ignite.

The Lithium Battery Fire Extinguisher works by spraying AVD (Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion) compound in a fine water mist. AVD quickly extinguishes the fire and stops the hazardous reaction processes within the cells, while the water acts as a cooling agent. When AVD dries, it forms a thin thermally insulating film that stops the fire re-igniting.

AVD is environmentally friendly and is made from vermiculite, a naturally occurring mineral.

 

What are the benefits of Lithium Battery Fire Extinguishers?

Lithium battery fires can quickly exceed temperatures of 800ºC, and once started can easily spread to other electronic devices and batteries. Until recently, there was no powder or liquid-based fire extinguisher that could tackle the unique hazards of a battery-ion fire.

Unlike standard ABC Fire Extinguishers, the Lithium Battery Extinguisher is better at preventing the reignition of Lithium Battery fires. This means that fires can be extinguished far more efficiently and safely.

They can be used to extinguish fires from personal electronic devices, such as mobile phones and tablets. They can also be used where batteries are charging and being stored, for example:
