A new fire station is set to be built in Cleveland as part of a major push to improve firefighting facilities across the county.

Cleveland Fire Brigade bosses have announced that a new state-of-the-art 'retained' fire station will be built at the Headland, Hartlepool to replace the existing facility which is almost 50 years old.

The Headland Fire Station in Durham Street is one of six retained fire stations maintained by Cleveland Fire Brigade.

Ian Hayton, Chief Fire Officer of Cleveland Fire Brigade, said: "Despite the financial pressures facing the Brigade, it is so important that we continue to invest for the future to ensure that we have facilities which are fit for the 21st century.

"The Headland Fire Station is coming to the end of its working life which is why it is a high priority on our building replacement programme."

There is currently one fire appliance located at the Headland Fire Station serving the local community, and the new building will be designed to continue to house one fire appliance plus a range of ancillary facilities which will also include plans to develop a community garden.

Councillor Robbie Payne, Vice-Chair of Cleveland Fire Authority and a Hartlepool borough councillor, said: "This is great news, particularly for people on the Headland and those living in the north of the town who are served by the Headland Fire Station.

"The building of a new fire station on the Headland at Hartlepool marks the start of a multi-million pound five-year rolling programme to bring about continuous improvement of Brigade facilities and that has to be welcomed."

The Brigade has commenced the tendering process and work is expected to start on the new building early next year with completion by the Summer of 2013.
