Inter-service adventure race for emergency services
The 999 Eco Adventure provides the Ambulance Service staff with a great opportunity to compete against other UK emergency services in a day of adventure racing in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales. Teams are invited to join up for a multi-discipline race involving running/walking, mountain biking, canoeing and navigation, with some mystery tasks along the way.
The event has been running since 2008 and is organised by Malcolm Auchie, a paramedic with the Scottish Ambulance Service. Malcolm is passionate about adventure racing and explains the inspiration behind the 999 Eco Adventure: "I believed that an inter-service adventure race would provide the ideal opportunity for emergency service staff to come together for a fun and friendly competition. This event will help to strengthen the relationships between our services.
"We have some great winners' prizes each year, as well as 'spot prizes' for other participants, including best team name. And what could be better incentive for taking part than the chance to get your own team and emergency service on the podium?"
The race is divided into 3 different categories: Fun, Intermediate and Advanced.
Fun Race
Teams of 2 competitors complete the race together while carrying out some running/walking, mountain biking and canoeing. Each discipline takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and participants are required to find their way around the course using very basic navigation. There are also mystery tasks to be carried out at some checkpoints - a sense of humour is a pre-requisite for some of these! The race route is staged over low level hills, forest trails and lakes.
Intermediate Race
This category is ideal for those who wish a bit more of a challenge but are worried if they are capable of competing in the advanced section. The Intermediate Race is the same format as the Fun Race except each category will take approximately 1 hour to complete. Again teams are made up of 2 competitors who must complete the course together.
Advanced Race
The ultimate challenge. Teams of 2 or 4 competitors will test their endurance and skills to the limit by completing a 6-hour route while staying together throughout the race. The route takes place over forest trails, lakes, and high mountains - do you have what it takes?
If you reckon you have what it takes to participate in any of the three races, grab some colleagues, think of a good team name, sign up and we'll see you on Saturday September 10, 2011 in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales.
