Firefighters from Northumberland have demonstrated the benefits of a new training facility at Newcastle Airport. The hot-fire breathing apparatus training facility was improved and extended at the end of last year thanks to funding from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service working partnership with Newcastle Airport.

The facility, which is run by Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service officers to train their own firefighters, will recoup the investment by providing courses for other organisations.

There are plans to run 35 courses per year and it is currently being used to train Newcastle Airport firefighters as well as firefighters from London City Airport.

Acting Chief Fire Officer for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, Alex Bennett, said: "This improved facility is an important addition to our service. It allows us to simulate some of the most serious incidents that our officers could encounter and will ensure that they are prepared to face the most dangerous conditions. We are also pleased to be able to offer expert training to other organisations and in this way we will recoup the investment we have made."

Councillor Alan Thompson, Northumberland County Council's executive member for public protection, said: "Planning and preparing for the most serious incidents is crucial and residents and visitors to Northumberland should feel reassured by this investment in training and expertise by Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service."

Steve Armstrong, Fire Service Manager at Newcastle Airport, adds: "We're extremely pleased to announce this new training facility in partnership with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service. Newcastle Airport Fire Service has recently gained approval from the Civil Aviation Authority to become an Approved Training Provider for Aviation Mandatory courses, to date we have attracted a raft of students from airports across the UK.

"These additional courses will bolster the already successful offering which we operate for small businesses and major industries in the North East, from basic fire extinguisher training to complete fire fighting and breathing apparatus training. The breadth of courses available will ensure the needs of our customer are met."
