A new Assistant Chief Fire Officer has been appointed to Oxfordshire County Council's Fire and Rescue Service.

Simon Furlong, who is currently serving with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, will be replacing current Assistant Chief Fire Officer Nathan Travis. Nathan will be taking over as Deputy Chief Fire Officer from Colin Thomas, who is retiring from the county's fire and rescue service after 31 years.

Simon's previous responsibilities have included service performance and improvement, training and development, risk reduction, operational response and project responsibility for the East and West Sussex joint control room.

Cllr Judith Heathcoat, Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, who was on the selection panel, commented: "Simon really impressed the panel with his considerable and wide-ranging experience with West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service. We were left in no doubt that he will be a real asset to Oxfordshire."

Chief Fire Officer Dave Etheridge said: "Simon will complement the senior team in Oxfordshire and I look forward to working with him to ensure Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service remains high performing and we continue on our journey to make a positive difference to everyone in our county".

Simon will be joining Oxfordshire FRS on September 1st.
