Chairman, South Wales Fire and Rescue Authority, Cllr Anthony Ernest, has announced the appointment of Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Director of Technical Services for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Rod Hammerton.

Rod Hammerton was selected by an Appointments Committee of the Fire and Rescue Authority held on June 15, 2011 and has taken up his new position within the service with immediate effect.

Chairman, South Wales Fire and Rescue Authority, Cllr Anthony Ernest said: "May I be the first to congratulate Rod Hammerton on his promotion by the Fire and Rescue Authority Appointments Panel to the position of Assistant Chief Fire Officer, within South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS).

"SWFRS truly is a great organisation and Rod has worked very hard during his time within the service, in various posts and most recently as Head of Operations, to contribute to the efficient and effective delivery of the organisations preventative and reactive services.

"Rod has continued to ensure that our communities have received the best service in terms of operational response and has been instrumental in driving forward fire prevention through an ambitious programme of Home Fire Fisk Checks".

Rod Hammerton said: "I am honored and proud to be appointed as Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Director of Technical Services, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

"I appreciate the support and confidence from Fire and Rescue Authority members and also from my colleagues within SWFRS and I am determined to continue with the good work the Service is already doing.

"I am a firm believer that our communities are best served when they are given the right information to help themselves but I also know that when people call 999 they expect, and deserve, the best operational response they can get.

"As such, I see my role as making sure SWFRS continues to have the best equipment, procedures and support available to them, to deliver a safe and effective service to the communities of South Wales.

"I will also continue to make sure that we work as closely as we can with our partners to ensure that when an emergency arises the public are protected to our best possible capabilities".
